May Day Taurus B-day Bash - Pictures

The Shameless crew represents the Taurus sign strong with multiple crew mates having their birthdays in May. The celebration this year took place house party style! It all started at 4pm with Luvshack deep frying a couple of turkeys in the backyard. From there Menami cooked up some fierce spiked lemonade and a bunch of people showed up with food, drinks, bubble machines, a giant blow up bunny rabbit (?!) and good cheer to share. Music kept going until 5:30 am! Thanks to all of the DJs, friends and family that helped make such a fun filled, warm and festive party at the YES! house go off so well.

I love music. I'd like to think that everyone else does too. Life itself has a beat; around the 22nd day of gestation, the human fetal heartbeat starts and an individual's own personal metronome begins it's lifelong and rhythmic pacing. When I am DJ'ing I often love to imagine that if I can connect well enough with the dancers on the floor before me, I may be lucky enough to beat match someone's heart to the music I'm playing. (It's totally possible - it's a game I play with myself with the heart rate monitor on the elliptical at the gym and the dance tracks on my MP3 player).

Speaking of heartbeats and music, I just finished listening to Rolo Tamasi's latest track, Automata. This song is the source of my heartbeat analogies today. There is something about this ethereal and grounded track that makes me think that if I could somehow go inside, Innerspace-style, and cruise around listening in on all of the sounds of my body, my blood moving, my organs working, my breath circulating it might sound something like this track. But maybe I'm wrong. The name of this track refers to self-operating machines, which sounds decidedly non-organic. Am I incorrect? Does this track sound mechanical? Is it devoid of the life-sounds I was imaging? Or am I just a romantic living in a digital world? Whatever the findings I really love this track, as just like some of his other compositions, such as Puget Sound and Fuckabees Dub. Check his stuff out. We love it around here.

My Bloody Valentine Is Shameless this Friday! Featured artist: J. Phlip (Dirtybird)

It’s that time of the year – the annual My Bloody Valentine is Shameless party is Friday, February 12 at Chop Suey, and Shameless is very excited to have special guest J. Phlip of the Dirtybird crew as part of the action-packed lineup! Chosen as one of URB Magazine’s Next 100 of 2009, J. Phlip has quickly established herself as a tried-and-true party starter and swifly rising producer and remixer.

J. Phlip (Jessica Phillippe) spent her teens dancing at numerous clubs and parties in her hometown of Champaign, Illinois and nearby Chicago, where she enjoyed the Windy City’s iconic house and underground hip-hop scene. Her exposure to such legends as DJ Heather, Derrick Carter, and Sneak had a marked influence on her musical development and eventually inspired her to procure decks herself at age 19 while attending the University of Illinois, where she studied – and excelled – in the Systems Engineering program.

During her time playing out in Chicago about five years ago, she met Justin Martin at a gig. She traded one of her DJ mix CDs for his collection of his own tracks, which she eagerly started playing (and specifically learned how to use CDJs to play then out). A subsequent meeting soon afterwards with the rest of the Dirtybird crew in Miami – Martin, Sammy D, and Claude Von Stroke – solidified a friendship that eventually brought her out to San Francisco for gigs that, in turn, compelled her to make a permanent move to the Bay Area and join the crew officially. She loves the freedom of expression that the San Francisco scene offers to play however she wants, whether it be “weird or harder or deeper” and currently plays every Thursday in San Francisco at the legendary Endup and at quarterly Dirtybird parties in SF at Mezzanine.

Now a fully-fledged Dirtybird artist, she has toured with Claude Von Stroke and released solid remix tracks on the label. As her Soundcloud page attests, she describes her musical stylings in a myriad of ways – but usually attaches the prefix “hybrid booty” onto each description: “hybrid booty techno” and “hybrid booty electro.” She explains that Claude Von Stroke originally tagged the term upon her DJ mixes, so she decided to use it on the multifarious genres she favors. But, and more simply put, she just likes “to keep the music fun and BOOTY shakin’ whether it be techy or housey or dubby or whatever” in her DJ mixes and original productions.

J. Phlip’s productions fit in comfortably with the signature Dirtybird tech-house sound that launched her labelmates Claude Von Stroke, Tim Green, and Justin and Christian Martin into worldwide notoriety. Take her remix of Luca Lozano’s Berlinetta” – it maintains a solidly Dirtybird-like backbeat and bassline while throwing in waves of subtle yet powerful tribal syncopated beats and oceanic synth fills that weave in and out of the track. She takes this pattern a few steps further with her remix of the Claude Von Stroke/Bootsy Collins collaboration “The Greasy Beat.” Here, an incessantly funky and blippy beat and bassline is ever-prevalent and builds ever-so-subtle momentum, punctuated with periodic old school James Brown-esque that unfolds into a Bootsy-powered preaching to the masses that suddenly, drastically, peaks and unleashes the floodgates that is sure to make the dance floor go apeshit.

Her last appearance in Seattle was during last year’s Decibel Festival, where she rocked the waters on the Uniting Souls boat party (even while braving the flu through it all). Her appearance at My Bloody Valentine Is Shameless may be the last Seattle appearance of J. Phlip for awhile, as she’s planning to move to Berlin this spring for five months to spread her gospel even further. Based on what we’ve heard thus far, look for J. Phlip to do even bigger things in the next few years.

Shameless XXXmas Parties 2009

I don't know if it's the spiked egg nog, the upcoming days off from work or maybe the impending doom of relatives coming into town that often makes the last Saturday before Christmas a serious contender for party night of the year.

This year, we're thrilled to be returning to the See Sound Lounge after a long hiatus. As a resident DJ since they first opened the doors over 6 years ago, I've watched the Lounge transform from a fresh new venue in Belltown to a well established and respected haven for quality electronic music. I'm sure it helps that one of the owners is a DJ himself. Details such as top notch equipment and good sound are obviously valued. A healthy balance of top local DJs and high profile out of town bookings helps to keep the vibe fresh, while consistently serving up one amazing party after another. See Sound Lounge is a one of a kind cosmopoliton venue with a clean, minimalistic design that appeals to a wide audience.

However, this Saturday December 19th it's going to get dirty. Both Levi Clark and I will be holding down the decks while MC Anton Bomb brings his magic to the mic. Levi is also planning to bring down his electric guitar to use as a midi controller off and on throughout the night. We're excited to be returning to the See Sound Lounge and hope that you'll come join us in our BELLTOWN INVASION!!






Plus, we'll be keeping the party going at the Monkey Loft later on. Resident Shameless DJs Menami and Adlib will be joined by special guests Kris Moon and Kristina Childs. Ms. Childs killed it at the last Hive Mind Halloween and we're looking forward to hearing her throw down for us again.

Kris Moon is one of my all time favorite local DJs. Unfortunately he hasn't been local for the past couple of years which makes this appearance even more special. He was the founder of Robo.Trash, a club night that inspired me to expand my own personal scope as a DJ. He started the Division email list years ago which has grown tremendously and represents electronic music DJs, producers and promoters all over the Pacific Northwest. He's also one of the originators of the Laptop Battle, a concept that has caught on all over the country. The Laptop Battle is taking place this Friday December 18th at Chop Suey.


In addition, Kris Moon has a weekly radio show call Moon Bass every Wednesday on KBGA 89.9 FM Missoula. Here's a link and tracklist from his show last week...

There has been quite a buzz out here this summer on the North end of the Left Coast. The underground electronic music community as come together to present a 3 night, 4 day music/art festival under the name Collective Flow. Putting the pieces together is our good friend Kyle from Live & Love. After quickly being known for throwing bad ass renegade parties across the greater Seattle area (some of his bridge parties thrown on the south end of Seattle have become legendary), he has quickly established himself as a young, motivated promoter eager to bring together various crews and communities.

This year, big names are booked such as Amon Tobin, Kid Koala and Daedelus. There will be free workshops throughout the day. Incredibly talented and divserse artists coming in from around the world. Plus, it's all going down in a beautiful outdoor located near Trout Lake, Washington.

If that wasn't reason enough make sure this event is a part of your weekend plans, we've also got a few Shameless DJs (Adlib, Menami & Recess) on the bill. Plus, our friend Joee Irwin (Palmsout Sounds, NYC) is flying in to throw down too! Check out the line-up. In particular look out for the Techno Barn. Yeeeeee-hah!

Pictures from Balls Out! 4 America

Well, we finally wrapped up our 4 part Balls Out! series with "bombs bursting in air". This series of events have been a blast and we're incredibly grateful to our team of volunteers and participants that have helped make each month unique. Here's a little recap of the past 4 months...

• We hosted AC Slater (NYC) and presented Seattle's first (& probably only) 'dunk the hipster tank'.
  
• We also brought out A1 Bassline (UK) for his Seattle debut performance and smashed a disco ball pinata in celebration of all things ridiculous.
  
• Finally got to throw a Warriors themed costume party. Those that know Recess personally know that he's been wanting to do that for years.
  
• Studio 75 Exclusive and friends stopped by last month to present one hell of a sexy fashion show.
  
• A bunch of bad ass local street artists showed off their talents each month in a live capacity.

For last Friday's family style event we welcomed our good friends from the Innerflight crew to get down with us. Kinoko, Eli Heuer & special guest Fu represented on the live art front. Killing Frenzy killed it on live visuals and Luvshack's extra bass went boom. Thanks to everyone that came out!

**WARRIORS THEMED COSTUME PARTY!**

Warriors, come out to play-ay! In the spirit of tough journeys, Coney Island homecomings, and keeping away from those that would hold you down, October’s edition of Balls Out! encourages costumes of the gritty, gang-filled Gotham sort. In addition to Wonder Wheel memories and sexy leather vests, this month’s show features top-notch Live Performances from 2 of Seattle’s most talented producers. Incite! aka Nordic Soul aka Sean Horton aka Mr. Decibel will bring out a heated electronic dance set. Also, prepare to be blown away by dark horse entry, AJ Spider Sorbello. Expect a filthy, electro-bass set from this local.

The Balls Out! crew has lots of great tricks and treats in store for this month. In addition to blistering live sets from Incite! and AJ Spider Sorbello, resident DJ sets from Recess and NAHA, this month’s features custom costumes by Babe of Belltown (Match Game), a Studio 75 Exclusive Fashion Show by Capitol Hill fashion icon Sir Rayven Blakk, Live Art by Kinoko of Fourthcity and Eli Heuer with Special Guest Artist Rondo (http://rondogoon.blogspot.com/). AJ Spider Sorbello was born in Sacramento, California. After attending his first underground event at age 11, AJ had found himself in a life changing experience. By 15 he was already DJing at numerous underground events. From 2001 on he's been DJing regularly with world class talent at massive events. Lately much of his time as been spent in the studio producing his own tracks which range across the spectrum of dance music genres. 'My Bloody Valentine is Shameless' party
Friday February 1st

The trouble started back in February of 2004 when Shameless hosted its Saturday night weekly at the Alibi Room. Rather than fall victim to the annual Hallmark holiday the crew turned Valentine's Day upside down by literally wearing their heart on their sleeve. Costumes were encouraged, make-up was generously applied and a raucous anti-Valentine's Day party has ensued each February since.

This year the 5th annual 'My Bloody Valentine is Shameless' grows in size and yet remains underground. The two room, all night party takes place under Interstate 5 at Hengst Studios. With Brooklyn's Trouble & Bass crew mates flying into Seattle for an exclusive appearance, a star studded local DJ line-up and a fashion show by Hot Shit Design, the cold month of February will heat up for this one night.

Passions (Trouble & Bass, Kitsune) returns to Seattle with a live set after his smashing debut at Broken Disco last year. Star Eyes (Trouble & Bass, XLR8R) joins him, returning to the west coast where she started DJing over 15 years ago. She regularly played with local veterans Eva & Naha who are also on the bill. Add to the mix a live breaks set by Novatron & Shapeshifter plus DJ sets by members of Shameless, Club Pop, Innerflight, Naha Army and Fourthcity and you have yourself an underground party that will be talked about for months.

However, with all of the great music lined up, the 5th annual event is more about people getting dressed up for 'Halloween in February' and taking a 'tongue in cheek' attitude towards the mid month holiday. To assist there will be a beautification/gorification station on hand to help everyone get festive. Hot Shit Design will be presenting a fashion show early on and there are rumors of another heart shaped pinata being present again this year. Watch out for hipsters, sex toys, old school heads, singles, sheep, ravers, heavy bass, lovers, burners, and goths...

PASSIONS Live! (NYC) [Trouble & Bass, Kitsune]
Passions was formed in the summer of 2006 by Ben Deitz after attending a rave in Berlin. While Ben is the only band member who will reveal his name and face, each member of Passions brings a unique history to the band; from Deitz's being mentored by a former member of Snap in high school, to another band mate's experiences in the the early 80's LA punk scene and with Chaos Magick. All of Passions however, share a love of dance music, from 90's hardcore, to electro-house, to grime and anything in between. Recently, all of these styles came together on Kitsune's 2007 release entitled "Emergency". Some know Ben as Mathhead. Others know him as Passions. For this year's Shameless party, Passions will deliver a specially crafted live set. Those that caught him performing at Broken Disco II for his Seattle debut know there will be equal parts disco, grime & bass.

STAR EYES DJ (NYC) [Trouble & Bass, Syrup Girls]
Star Eyes is one half of the Syrup Girls and part of the raucous Trouble & Bass crew from NYC. Although she's active in NYC's music scene as a music editor for XLR8R, her 15+ years of experience behind the decks takes her back to another generation of DJs. In the mid 90s she was an active Jungle/DnB DJ in San Francisco playing regularly up in Seattle at places like Naf with Eva, Naha and many others. Her self described influences span more than just genres. Breakbeat hardcore. Staying up too late. Siouxsie. Raw spaces/places. Notorious B.I.G. Depeche Mode. Bass in yr face. The Prodigy. Strobe lights. 808s and 909s. Wizards & elves. Maker's Mark. Dubplates. Boots n braces. The quiet storm. Ludacris. NY Times Sunday crossword. Andy C. Paper Rad. Fugazi. Fonts and lettering. EVA - DJ [iO Music, Work it Baby!]
Raised in the Seattle area, Eva is considered to be one of the most promising DJ's to emerge from the US. She is in constant demand to perform alongside the worlds top DJs... Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, Oakenfold, Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, James Zabiela, Satoshi Tomeii, Adam Freeland, Hybrid and Sander Kleinenberg to name but a few. Her forward-thinking approach, superb A&R sensibility, and cutting-edge style has captured the attention of everyone from Pete Tong, and Felix Da Housecat to James Lavelle. It was Lavelle who gave Eva her first big break, an invitation to play at arguably the best club in the world, Fabric in the UK. Her unique diversity and natural ability to connect with her audience make her a crowd favorite. Eva has headlined the hottest venues across the globe in such destinations as Jakarta Indonesia, Seoul South Korea, Hong Kong, China, LA, San Francisco, Miami, New York and the UK. Not only is Eva an amazing DJ talent, she co-produced the sublime remix of UNKLE's Invasion, with the legendary producer Medway, which features the vocals of Massive Attack's 3D. "Invasion", was featured on James Lavelle's Global Underground Romania album, and received international critical acclaim, as well as high praise from her peers, and music lovers everywhere. For Shameless' 5th annual event, Eva's bringing it back to the underground with a rare set that pushes the boundaries of what electro sounds like today.

It's been a long time since NAHA's original crew TRUSKOOL started bringing hardcore legends to Seattle and since then she has carried the flag for hardcore and breakcore in the NW. Add the elements of rap, grime, punk, ragga, and electro and you've got an amalgamation of sounds that has inspired an army. If you like rough and rugged tracks and bass-heavy mash-ups, then pull up those boot straps and grab your helmet because its time to get RAW.

RECESS - DJ Set (Shameless, Broken Disco)
Raised on the industrial, new wave, and pop music of the time, in the late 80's Recess found his second home at the now defunct Club Underground in Seattle's University District. Using these early experiences as a platform, he started collecting records and honing his skills at various clubs around the Northwest; quickly establishing himself as a formidable performer. Recess is the main force behind local collective Shameless (responsible for Broken Disco, Electric Avenue, BootyLIB, the Official Decibel Festival afterparties and numerous other local one offs with artists such as Modeselektor, Drop the Lime, Egyptian Lover, Godfather & Tittsworth) and he continues to turn heads with his unique take on dance music. He's played alongside heavy hitters such as Modeselektor, Green Velvet, Felix Da Housecat, Damian Lazarus, MSTRKRFT, John Tejada, DJ Assault, Ewan Pearson, Smash TV and could quite easily be caught playing electro/discopunk at one club, baile funk/bmore club/ghetto tech at another, or techno/house depending upon the crowd and party. His versatility has led to being nominated in 2006 for the Seattle Weekly's Best Local DJ. Whether it's an afterhours loft space, major club, mountaintop, or random BASSment; Recess consistently brings the sounds and energy to fit any dance party.

NOVATRON W/ SHAPESHIFTER - Live
A man of peace, a man of truth and a man of some serious fucking wicked voodoo science. Nova blazes on-- from dusty border towns to urban Utopia. Using/abusing the Korg Electribe line of outboard modules, our man brings the electro-breaks solid and deep. His sound is thick and highly danceable. Every performance is an improvised mixture of beats and bass; keeping the flow interesting as well as making the heads happy while they dance. This is not music for sitting back and scratching your chin. It is the dance floor that Nova has engaged and his audience makes it clear that they are grateful for the favor.
Of special note: DJ Shapeshifter will be performing with Nova on the scratch mix, so be ready for dance floor mayhem!!!

LEVI CLARK - DJ [Shameless]
Levi's musical background started at an early age and varies among rock, electronica, hip hop, classical, blues and jazz. This up and coming DJ began performing music while still in his early teens. Only having recently begun to perfect his skills behind the decks, Levi Clark has already shared the stage with headliners such as Superstar Keoki, John B & the Institubes crew. Today's focus is trained on electro oriented beats while also diving into breaks and techno. Levi Clark is passionate for all music that is "dirty" and makes people want to dance.

MENAMI - DJ
Growing up outside St. Louis and NYC, Menami was exposed to many different types of music and developed a strong love for music and dancing at a young age. She eventually wound up in Seattle and later stumbled across Shameless crew late 2004, later becoming the requisite Jill-of-all-trades for the group. She enjoys and collects techno, electro, bass music, tech-house, ghetto tech, dirty club and party music as well as dreamy, domestic downtempo.

M'Chateau is a local destroyerator with an epitome of excellency, a city's icon to say the least. As member of the FourthCity collective, he has been a leading force in the local Micro-Rave movement, spearheading parties like the infamous now disintegrated Triple Decker Pioneer Square loft series. Going on 4 years behind the decks, M'Chateau's choice in style is stirred with allegiance for Detroit and Germany and unconditional love for Latin and Brazillian music.
