Please join us on Saturday, March 26th for ROUND 2 of the recently revitalized Shameless Social! This month, we're incredibly excited to be hosting our good friends from the ever-talented Innerflight crew in a tag-team DJ session of epic proportions. Each Shameless resident will be going head-to-head with an Innerflight resident of YOUR CHOICE! That's right, you get to vote on the pairing!Our crews have been good friends for years, and most of us have played together at a variety of shows. But we've only gone head-to-head one other time, at Balls Out, an old Shameless monthly at the ReBar. Balls were out! Beats were dropped! Words were exchanged! Costumes were worn! Star-spangled banners were played! It was an outright deluge of dance music insanity. In the very end, there were no clear winners... except the dancers still standing when the lights were turned on. This time may prove to be even crazier...

Lover. Fighter. Prophet. Freak magnet. Time-traveler. Musician, photographer and designer Jimmy Edgar is a wayward star-child streaking across the cosmic dance-floor. Endowed with a supernatural feel for futuristic funk, the Detroit native has been bleeping and grinding about the Milky Way since he was a teenage humanoid. While his peers were worrying about their grades and popularity, Edgar was spinning alongside his hometown's DJ heroes and programming intricate beats that were unquestionably interplanetary communication disguised as dance music. In 2001 at the tender of 18, his hyper-sexed microchip stylings caught the ear of Warp, where he cranked out his brand of amped-up laptop funk for the next eight years, culminating in the full-length classic “Color Strip”. Now 26, Edgar is shaking things up at German beat boutique !K7. "When I was 18 and signed with Warp, my next goal was !K7 for some reason. I believe I attracted !K7 to me through the 'Law of Attraction'. I think this is going to be an incredible journey." The new album “XXX” is out at the end of July and its New Jack Swing winks as much at Minneapolis, Compton and Paris as it does Detroit or Berlin. On new turf, Edgar's sonic prowess takes on a leaner, more radio-ready shine. "Function of Your Love" zips and struts about like something Andre Cymone might have cooked up for Jody Watley in their chart-topping heyday. On "Hot, Raw, Sex" Edgar lets the synth stabs and hand claps fly fast and loose. "In My Color" has the percolating, crystalline bounce of I:Cube's late 90's French Touch. "Midnite Fone Call" is the kind of lush “Quiet Storm” that Alex Gopher might kill for. "Push", with its staccato rhythm and come-hither incantations would make Timbaland blush. The instrumental interlude "One Twenty Detail", runs Kraftwerk through a low-rider worthy break-beat filter and "Vibration" sounds like pornographic Morse Code tapped out by Egyptian Lover. While the album is largely a one-man show, “XXX” is not without accomplices. A Latvian girl named Anet sings on "Physical Motion" and a rising new R&B singer from NYC signed to XL recordings, Azealia, ad libs on the same track. "Whenever I have worked with women and art, they have this way of putting balance into everything." The album's sophistication should come as no surprise, considering the mix of elements that factored in its creation. "Celibacy. Love and Loss. A myriad of intense relationships. Home studio on mostly analog equipment, finished digitally. Some recorded on tape. Some recorded frustrated, sick, broke, pissed off, in love." Referring to other influences, Edgar adds, "I learned piano from black dudes at the Baptist church in Detroit. They taught me to extend my fingers and play from the heart." As for Kraftwerk, the Belleville Three and the rest of the early electronic pioneers he says, "Those guys were tryin to make Stevie Wonder more danceable. They were tryin to make Prince with that equipment. That is what I do essentially." What Edgar does essentially and very well is make your body move. Most of the time he does it alone, but there has been no shortage of willing partners. In addition to an array of remixes for everyone from pop acts like Will Smith and Scott Hardkiss to indie darlings like emo-electro duo Purple Crush and new wave soul man Theophilus London - including 2009's cruising-with-the-top-down jams "Blindfolded" and "Higher" - he famously turned Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" inside out into a blistering workout from beyond. Deeply inspired by Jacko and incapable of standing still for very long himself, the ever-restless Edgar is eager to take his musical peep show on the road this summer. As if his beats and dancing weren't enough, just to make his seductive intent perfectly clear, Edgar adds "I designed 12 florescent neon tubes to make an "XXX" on stage." Ultimately, the best thing about Jimmy Edgar's intergalactic funk is that for all its mystical kink, it's solidly the kind of music you could easily imagine today's pop tarts making. If Beyonce, Lady Gaga or Fergie had any sense, their million dollar booties would have Jimmy Edgar on speed dial already.

My Bloody Valentine 2011 Recap, Pictures and Thanks!

Thanks to everyone that came out to our 8th Annual 'My Bloody Valentine is Shameless' party last weekend. We had a blast and it looked like many of you did too! Chris Van Wick was kind enough to take some pictures during the event. Click here to view them all.

A lot of time and energy went into this party and in turn there are many people to thank. First off, a huge thanks to Billy and the FRED Wildlife Refuge for taking a risk on us. It was the first event of it's kind there and we were honored to be a part of it. Second, lots of love to all of our DJs and performers. Everyone brought their A game! That goes for Looptid too, who impressed many with his giant projections on both walls. Special thanks goes out to Jess, Tasha, Cara and the rest of the decorating crew, Joe McLean for setting up the lights/space shaping, SEAF, 4Horseman (for not just performing, but for making jello shots and holding it down at coat check), Starborne Sound, Castle Sex Shop for donations, Sugarcomb Salon and Alisha who worked the Beautification/Gorification Station, ProBooth for the photography booth and all of our amazing volunteers that helped promote, set-up/break down and worked various positions throughout the party. With everyone's support we were able to make some cash for LLAA, celebrate our anniversary with our family/friends and kept the 'My Bloody Valentine is Shameless' tradition alive for 8 years running. Thank-you again for not just coming, but for participating! We hope to see you at some of our upcoming events.

Amidst the countless DJ’s and producers working in the burgeoning Chicago house scene, Santiago and Bushido stand apart from the rest with their unique blend of tech-tinged house beats and killer remixes that are becoming quite the sought-after commodity. Since teaming up as a production duo in 2003, Chris Santiago and Tim Bush have dropped numerous EP’s and remixes on some of the most well respected labels around including Potty Mouth, Om, Ultra, and have generated a significant following in the process. Their unique sound and flawless DJ sets have helped to establish Santiago & Bushido as one of the premier acts in dance music today.
Their track ‘Head Trick’ was one of the true dance anthems of 2008, a major crossover success receiving play and charting from many of the globe’s top DJ’s such as Moby, DJ Tiesto, Switch, Armin Van Buren, and Diplo. Head Trick was the 1 most downloaded song in January 2008, and the 8 most downloaded of the entire year on Beatport.com, the world’s top online site for electronic music. Santiago & Bushido followed the success of Head Trick with a number of critically acclaimed releases and remixes including a massive remix of Kaskade’s Billboard 1 hit single Move For Me, a reworking of Larry Tee’s Louis Vuitton, and their original single Can’t Be Wrong which has been licensed to numerous complications such as Ministry of Sound. In addition to belting out club tracks Santiago and Bushido have worked with Om recording artist Colette on her artist album “Push” for which they wrote and produced multiple songs including the album’s single, “If,” which was licensed for an episode of Real World for “MTV” and can also be purchased as a ring tone from Verizon.

Having been intimately involved with music his entire, life Bushido picked up his first pair of turntables and sampler on his 16th birthday and immediately went to work mixing, sampling, and cutting up any piece of vinyl he could get his hands on. His carefully crafted DJ sets caught the ears of some of Chicago’s nightlife elite and he soon found himself playing all over the city. Tim spent his days working at Chicago Recording Company, sharing the same recording space with the likes of R.Kelly and Smashing Pumpkins among others. By working alongside some of Chicago’s most well respected engineers at CRC, Bushido honed his engineering and production prowess until opportunity knocked.

While Bushido was mastering his craft, Santiago was working his way up the Chicago’s nightlife hierarchy. Within one year of playing live gigs, he secured a Friday night residency at Zentra Nightclub’s House Arrest, and within a year he would be playing to Chicago’s most musically educated and up-for-it partiers as an exclusive resident at “World’s Best Dance Club”, Smartbar, joining the halls of dance icons that have enjoyed similar slots there (including other current residents Kaskade and Justin Long).

As DJ’s, Santiago & Bushido draw influence from their Chicago house background and apply harder and heavier elements to their sound. Santiago & Bushido are regularly headlining and appearing at some of the best parties in the US and beyond including Avalon in LA, Decibel Festival in Seattle, and Bed in Miami. Recent shows have them playing along side some of the hottest talent around today such as Deadmau5, Crookers, and Kaskade. Their 2009 dates include a multi-city tour in Australia, multiple trips to Europe, and regular gigs in North America.

J Phlip (pronounced J Flip) known to some as Jessica Phillipe discovered house music in her hometown of Champaign, Illinois, just 2 hours south of Chicago. Sometime around her 19th birthday she got her first DJ rig -

two belt drive turntables and a mixer lacking EQ knobs for $100 bucks! From then on, her poor roomates were forced to listen to a constant dance party in-between her Systems Engineering studies. There aren't a lot of 4.0 brainiac engineering majors who decide to become DJs instead of cashing in on their degrees but Jessica truly loves the music and has dedicated her life to it.

Her proximity to Chicago’s famous house scene tremendously affected her sound, but the distance afforded her the freedom to incorporate a variety of other influences into her repertoire. Her sets posses a fun, "lets-not-forget-this-is-dance-music," feeling and simultaneously keep you guessing about what might come next. Her collection spans house, tech house, deep house, techno, booty bass and pretty much anything that make you shake your ass.

She’s currently a well known DJ/Producer in San Francisco. Her skills on the decks and in the studio have secured her highly desirable spot as an official member of the dirtybird crew. She has a residency at San Francisco’s infamous Endup nightclub, which is notorious for its non-stop, never-ending parties.

Jessica continues to have new productions coming out on dirtybird where she has signed on as an exclusive original artist. She is currently Claude VonStroke's favorite support DJ and has already played at amazing high profile gigs like Fabric, Space Ibiza & Back to Basics. She was also chosen for URB Magazine's Next 100 of 2009 and recently temporarily returned after a successful extended trip to Berlin. But she won’t be on the West Coast for much longer as Europe is once again calling her name. From there she’ll be making asses shake on the dancefloor and she's just as excited about it as the day she got her belt drives!

Former Seattle resident Brent Tactic celebrates his first year rocking Kansas City clubland with his wildly popular Yeeeah Buddy residency and blog. Perhaps best known around the Northwest as one half of Tactic, along with Ben Tactic of Portland’s Bubblin’ fame, co-founder of Think 2Wice Records, and ye olde Flea Market days at Chapel, Brent always tenaciously champions an amalgam of styles and genres in the dance, deftly mixing hot underground and contemporary hip-hop with electro, house, techno, and everything else in between.

DJs can attest to how hard this is, and only few selectors such as Brent Tactic & JD Twitch can bounce genres with ease and heat.

It's a downright gorgeous day down here in Portland visiting with friends and working on projects. Blue sky, a delicate wind blowing through the trees across from my friend's porch - all providing an amazing visual accompaniment to what I'm listening to right now: Douglas Teike's beautiful album Works for Piano and Ambient Guitar.

Perhaps best known as Retic (under which he's made outstanding records and performed inventive & cinematic live PA sets), Doug establishes a mood that gives me the chills. It is not always easy to make music that naturally and effortlessly reaches deep into your soul, but Doug accomplishes this on this record. The mood of Works for Piano and Ambient Guitar is reflective, hopeful, and richly textured with generous flourishes of synth washes and guitar loops, creating a world you want to dive in headfirst. I cannot recommend this enough.

This year Decibel Festival brings you the Shameless Showcase starring Dan Bell & Deepchild Thursday September 23rd 2010 @ Chop Suey in Capital Hill. Last March, Deepchild came to Seattle for Menami's Music Madness.

Deepchild niced up the party just right.

Deepchild will be returning for the Shameless Showcase at Decibel 7 this year on September 23rd. He will be joined by techno legend, Dan Bell. Who will be throwing down a DJ set. Also local DJ CTRL_ALT_DLT of Sweatbox will be setting the stage for the evening in the main room.

I just found this short video clip taken from April's edition of Say What?! It's only been a couple of months and I'm already missing this extremely HOT, yet short lived monthly. Buffalo Madonna and Trent Moorman saved the day when the DJ was having technical difficulties by keeping the show going with an impromptu freestyle set. The video might be a bit dark, the sound might be a bit crappy, but it was a magical clubbing moment that even the 18+ kids go to enjoy.

Solvent
(Ghostly Int'l- Toronto) - Live

Solvent is Jason Amm, a robot music composer, analog synthesizer fetishist, and co-founder of the renowned Suction Records label. Born in Zimbabwe in 1972, Solvent currently resides in a room full of machines in Toronto, Canada. He is touring in support of his new album "Subject To Shift" out May 25th on Ghostly.

Solvent has been releasing his unique brand of synthesizer-pop music since 1997, and is best known for his releases on Morr Music (2001's "Solvent City") and Ghostly International (2004's "Apples & Synthesizers", 2005's "Elevators & Oscillators"). Solvent has created his own unique version of electro-pop: too elegent and sincere for the electroclash set, too complex and contemporary to sound like it was recorded in 1981, and too seeped in the time-honoured traditions of melody, songwriting and hands-on synthesis to be lost in the overcrowded world of IDM. Along with some notable remixes including Soft Cell, Alter Ego, and Adult., Solvent has also contributed standout tracks to several influential electronica compilations in recent years, including "Putting The Morr Back In Morrissey" (Morr Music), "Disco Nouveau" (Ghostly International), and "Misery Loves Company" (Ersatz Audio). His songs have also been licensed to several high-profiles DJ mix CDs, including Sven Vath's "Sound of the 5th Season" (Cocoon), Dr. Lektroluv's "Lektroluv 5" (541), and Death in Vegas' "Fabric Live 23" (Fabric London). Today, Solvent is widely regarded in the underground electronica community as being the forefront of electro-pop's return to form.

UK magazine The Wire recently described Solvent as part of a new generation of composers "gleefully blurring the lines" between modern techno and vintage techno-pop. Solvent currently records exclusively for Ghostly International, and has been touring extensively since 2004, having shared the stage with Adult., Legowelt, Bola, Junior Boys, Matthew Dear, Lusine, Lowfish, and more.

Lusine (Ghostly Int'l- Seattle) - Live

Jeff McIlwain has been producing his visceral, melodic strain of abstract electronic music as Lusine for 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff attended CalArts in 1998, studying 20th-century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out his self-titled debut as Lusine for Isophlux. Since then, McIlwain relocated to Seattle and began steadily releasing his music on Ghostly International. As Lusine, Jeff is one of Seattle's most revered and internationally respected producers.
McIlwain has performed throughout the US and abroad, including a set at London’s esteemed Fabric nightclub, and an ambient multimedia performance at Seattle’s Triple Door in which he collaborated with video artist Scott Sunn. McIlwain has recently been involved in two film projects, co-scoring David Gordon Green’s 2008 film Snow Angels (with Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell), and scoring Kevin Bray’s 2009 film Linewatch (with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omari Hardwick).

McIlwain’s 2009 release, A Certain Distance, has gone on to become his best reviewed and best selling album to date. In addition, 2009 has brought Lusine several high profile festival performances, including DEMF, MUTEK, Sonar and the Decibel Festival.

Relcad (Album release party; Pleasure Boat Records) - Live

Relcad is a world-class and heavily-trained experimental house/techno musician that conjures up wild soundscapes and stunning atmospheres that combine the pulse of house music, the detail-centered tweaks of micro-dub, and the relentless energy of techno. Last year he released a track on Peloton Musique alongside a smattering of internationally-respected artists, of which Dave Segal of The Stranger stated the his "piece damn near stole the show, even from esteemed figures like Markus Nikolai, Jeff Samuel, Lusine, and Twerk."
Live PAs in the past have seen Relcad building unrelenting and momentous energy over a heavy bedrock of unclassifiable sounds and heavy bass. A Seattle artist who plays out infrequently, Relcad is one of the most remarkable and hidden gems in a city full of them. Relcad will be celebrating the release of his phenomenal new full-length Capital Island on Pleasure Boat Records, which will be available at the show and released nationwide the following month.

Potatofinger (Pleasure Boat Records) - Live

World-class sound mangler and beat mathematician Eli Hetrick, aka PotatoFinger, is an amazingly deft musician that has such a singular, unique, and developed sound that you'll swear you've never heard him before. Thick grimey bass, breakbeats cut to shreds, and details that take months to lay down.
Self-described as "polymorphic beat structures juggling/phasing/interspersing with atmospheric melodic concoctions", Potatofinger has been blazing around the music charts of KEXP for the last year and has been receiving nationwide airplay as of recent. Expect to hear much more in the future from him.

The Algebra of Need (Pleasure Boat Records) - Live

Lydia, aka The Algebra of Need, is an eccentric genius in her craft- the manipulation of live tonal clusters and tension used to build fugues of the future and meditations on hidden corners of the world. Some of the most haunting and brazenly bizarre music happening in Seattle, The Algebra of Need's music is still kept in balance by the alternating beauty and extreme sound manipulation present in her work. David Segal of The Stranger stated "the Algebra of Need is a maverick on the level of Aphex Twin and Raymond Scott." With almost no internet presence or scene involvement there's nothing that can be expected of her next performance.

Exclusive Shameless interview with James Holden

On July 3rd, Shameless and Neumo’s proudly present the Seattle installment of James Holden’s highly anticipated “DJ Kicks” world tour, with Eva, Levi Clark and myself (Adlib) opening. Holden has always been a huge influence on my DJ career, so I was honored when he interrupted his busy tour schedule last week for a brief interview. He squeezed me in at 9:00 am my time, just before departing the UK to play back-to-back bookings at the world-famous Sonar festival in Barcelona and the next night with Michael Mayer at Mondo in Madrid. We had a sprawling conversation about his DJ Kicks mix, the direction of dance music over recent years and his feelings on heading an independent dance music label. I’ve included the most important highlights below.

DK:

It's been 5 years since you last visited Seattle. In your view, what have been some of the biggest changes in your music and dance music in general during that time, particularly related to how you approach mixing and making it?

JH:

“A lot has changed in the last five years and during that time I unfortunately haven’t been in the US very much. It’s getting much harder to get a Visa to come over, so it’s been a bit weird for people (who expect a certain kind of music out of me). Everything around me has changed in the time since they (Americans) have last seen me, and I of course have changed in reaction to what’s happening around me. Any musician is like that... If you don’t get to see me very often then it’s quite a jump.

But at the same time there are always these constant threads that run through music, which is what the mix CD is all about. There’s some really old music on there and there’s music that doesn’t seem related, but it’s all the same basic idea carrying on through time. What I’m into now is what I’ve always been into -the melodic and hypnotic kind of feeling. It doesn’t matter that the sounds and the influence have changed so much because we’re all dancing to the same thing in the end.

I remember the arcs of scenes from when I was younger. You saw progressive get really big, then sort of die or go very small again. The same thing has (recently) happened with minimal techno and electro, following this similar curve of everything becoming a cliché’ and the whole thing collapsing in on itself. You start to wonder if it’s always going to be the same thing. You know, these cyclical arcs carrying on…

But dance music’s been around about thirty years now. It’s as old and trad(itional) as rock and roll was when we were really young kids.… the kids coming through now, the youngest producers, they’ve grown up with Warp Records being stuff they just know. Like Guns-N-Roses was to me, Aphex Twin can be to someone else. So they have a completely new picture of electronic music in the end. There are some really innovative people who aren’t making (any specific genre) but get lumped into that category, like Zomby with dubstep for example. They’re making rich and diverse music that can survive outside of these stupid (genre) circles that have seen clichés.”

DK:

You “discovered” several now prominent experimental and ambient techno producers like Nathan Fake, Extrawelt and Fairmont and later signed them to your label. What guides you when seeking out new music and what is a deciding factor when you decide to forge a long-term relationship with someone by bringing them into border community or collaborating with them on production?

JH:

“Well I can’t quite take credit for discovering Fairmont. He had his first release on Sender. I remember buying it on vinyl and thinking it was the most amazing thing ever. Otherwise, we just listen to the demo box and make our way through methodically and slowly. We’re a million miles behind. It’s always been that if we like the music, we’d want to work with someone. But it’s been quite nice in that everyone whose music we’ve liked has turned out to be a pretty cool person. And they all get along with each other. Everyone in the label is friends with each other, rather than it being just an outwards business… We do our best to help each other out and pass each other influences. Hearing Nathan’s half-finished tracks has always been super inspiring for Luke Abbot or me.”

DK:

It’s not only your production, but also your overall musical worldview that seems to have a ‘progressive’ bent. “The Idiots are Winning” seems like a not-so-subtle critique of contemporary society and music politics. What are your thoughts on the relationship between music and social commentary? How do you feel about contemporary music politics? What do you think this means for artistic expression and being a professional musician?

JH:

“I really do believe that the way you decide to approach making music and running a label completely affects the way the music comes out. I’m not at all interested in music that is trying to please people or be functional. That stuff comes from approaching it with a money-making or desperate for success attitude… My personal views came about initially as an accident. I felt uncomfortable working with people with had that kind of (money-making) attitude, and after a while I realized that if you treat everyone with respect and don’t patronize the crowd by thinking they’re stupid so you have to play them stupid music, then it feeds back…

It was like an evolutionary thing. When I was really young I worked with major labels and saw the disaster of trying to squeeze music out of an artist to make another sausage for the conveyer belt. That was how bad music got created, so I sought to do the opposite. I was quite lucky to have these terrible experiences when I was young because everything was right there in front of me (laughs). It became obvious how to really make music and be happy… and the ultimate results are much better with that method or outlook. I don’t think it was intended as a political thing at all, but it sort of turned out that way, which has also turned out to be an efficient or successful way for me to work.”

DK:

What were the most exciting moments when preparing and making the DJ Kicks mix? What were the biggest hurdles with the mix and the tour?

JH:

“It was really exciting preparing for this mix. I’m sort of listening for music all the time. I always have my whole library on random play and listen for things I can pull out to DJ with. But in this case I was doing it much more than normal and some of the things we found or remembered that were quite unique and fun. But there were disappointments as well. There was this really amazing Tony Conrad and Faust record from the seventies and we couldn’t clear the legal stuff. It was a bit gutting.

It’s quite hard because of the way I mix with fitting everything in key. When I’m DJing a club I have my laptop and it’s full of music so there’s always something I can work together to create the path I want to make. But when you have a limited list of tracks (as in for a CD), you have to think really carefully about where you want to start and where you’re going. In the end, you end up missing out on loads of stuff that could of gone on the CD that I love, that I just have to put it in my DJ sets…”

Esthetic Evolution #6- Twin Springs, ID

Ever wanted to party with a 1000 of your closest friends? Ok ok... maybe not all of them are your best friends, but there's likely only a couple of degrees of separation between them. That's how it works out here in the Northwest and that applies to Seattle, Portland, Boise and beyond. That closeness and cohesive network is one of the reasons our corner of the country has been gaining such a positive reputation for having an incredibly rich and creative music community. The folks at Esthetic Evolution in beautiful Twin Springs, ID have done a wonderful job building up their annual music and arts festival. So much so that they've almost sold ALL 1000 of their available tickets! As of this blog post there are less than 50 tickets available and they're only located at record stores in Boise.

Shameless speaks with The Naturebot! [Bonkers! / Pleasure Boat Records]

Recently Shameless met up with The Naturebot inside a computer. There they chit chatted about space time and the smell of burning circuits. We also talked about the second installment of the Shameless Social with Ghostly International's Solvent and Lusine and The whole gang from Pleasure Boat Records/Bonkers!.

You have so many great producers in PBR. Where did you gather these misfits from?

Well, we all are interested in the same angle of the music as far as I can tell- we enjoy electronic tools because of their limitless possibilities for expression and we create music out of angst about an ideal- I believe that we all express our frustration with the limits and prisons of the modern physical world but taking ownership and control back over the machines that placed us in the predicament of working endlessly in a vacuum and a lack of true and meaningful adventure on a personal level.

Anyhow, after I met a couple people (Erictronic and Rave On It) that I believe shared a portion of that angst and channeled it creatively, we started throwing shows. Its pretty apparent when you find someone that is compatible with or shares a creative vision and through the shows (Bonkers!) we threw we all met artists from which mutual respect and admiration grew.

Seeing that those involved with ‘shaping’ the electronic scene in Seattle seem to have little interest in putting music FROM Seattle on the map (that isn’t represented already), it was a natural decision to do it ourselves. We’re not the only ones out there doing this, but its downright absurd how many fans of ‘independent music’ look for the same feelings, benchmarks, and marketing schemes as each other. I don’t think Pleasure Boat aims to please crowds, just comfort those with the same fears and frustrations as us that there is others like them out in the world. And, seeing as I met and continue to meet individuals that share these feelings outside of the scene as it exists, I think that the world of electronic music is a far more widespread and multi-faceted force than ever before. At some point that will become apparent to the general public, and it seems more plausible that it will with every day.

What kinds of sound are you seeking for your label?

When I listen to music I enjoy, it always feels as if it was created in its own world- that, instead of building the regular Frankenstein of influences, there’s an intention and urge served by the music. I’m guessing the average person doesn’t associate that with electronic music or dance music, but the medium is so open-ended and fast-moving these days that its hard to not be creative. There’s an amazing amount of creative music being made right now, but so much of it strives for a communal mindset.

I hope to hear stubbornly individualistic music that exists outside of the backwards idea of being at the ‘forefront of modern music’, and I hope that the fetishization of ‘new movements’ dies off quickly as it blocks the potential for electronic music to be the new form of folk art- a way for people to tell others about their lives and experiences, and create truly unique musical worlds, using tools readily available in the modern era. Anyone with a computer can make an album and has access to tools that engineers a few decades ago wouldn’t have dreamed of.

Tell us why you are bringing the Ghostly International Showcase here to Seattle?

I got into Solvent when I started throwing shows in 2007 and was actively going to record shops and trying to find music I’d never heard. Solvent City (Solvent’s 2001 album) was in a bin and the cover was ridiculous so I listened to it and felt like I’d made a new friend. The music was so warm and dry that I listened to that album almost every day for a whole winter while stuck in a tiny shit-hole apartment. I contacted Solvent about playing in Seattle if he was available and he got back to me with a US and Canadian tour looking to get booked. That Lusine was touring with Solvent was huge, these are two artists that have been putting out records from their own fantastic worlds for years and that are both something of heroes to me. I like the physical aspect of music, but much more than watching someone shred on a guitar I enjoy hearing amazing movement and physics in the sound itself, that’s what makes my brain go crazy. Both of these artists represent that ideal and both of them are focused on melody and beauty. Throwing this night is a chance to show people a very, very different side of the dance music coin. Ghostly International is all about that, just as Pleasure Boat Records is. I’m thrilled about the showcase and know that there will be many people at the show that will walk away feeling like they found a new ideal in music. Yes, I am that excited about the show.

Are ghosts capable of faster than light travel?

It’d be nice to look forward to that, wouldn’t it?

What's next for Bonkers!?

Who knows, I’ve been attempting to return to the emptier and odder parts of the country for awhile now. Wherever I end up, the culture I live in will be represented. Albuquerque might become an electronic music juggernaut, or I might just spin acid tracks in the garage all summer long with the doors open. Music is not the most important thing in my life (I have a dog, a fiancé, and dearly miss the non-human world at large), so if my life is so full that I don’t feel that the music I love is worth spreading, I’m alright with that.

The Last Say What'? WHAT?!

Too cute. Too much good music. Too much fun... and too sad it may be the last show for now. After a fantastic, but short four month run, Say What may be on hold indefinitely. It's future uncertain. And yet, the pictures remind us of how important it can be to never miss an opportunity to dance. To always seize the moments we have while they are still in front of us. Shameless has it's plate full this summer and will continue to be very active in the local music scene. Unfortunately this is one of the reasons why we have to take a step back from Say What. We're incredibly grateful to so many of you that supported and believed in this night. We hope it will resurface again sometime soon. But in the meantime, there are always these great pictures for us to remember the night...

Like most musicians, Chris Roman's path is rooted in a veritable melting pot of sounds. Some of the influences are obvious. Others not so much so.
His Puerto Rican birthright and Miami upbringing ring apparent when he's pumping out sci-fi roller disco sounds, but when his vibe turns to the cold dark comfort of Detroit-esque minimal mind funk, it would seem this man forgets from whence he came. It's a memory lapse that sounds like a lapdance in the side room of a space ship. More importantly, it's a memory lapse that works. It's not so much a lapse then as a love of diversity, a creative finesse with a variety of good tastes.

She'll be returning to Seattle one last time before she flies off to Berlin for awhile (and so the story goes...the West Coast loses another one of our finest to the clutches of Germany!). For those of you that caught her at the Decibel boat party, My Bloody Valentine is Shameless or the afterhours, you know she's the real deal and delivers some of most fun tech house booty shakin' business out there! Claude VonStroke wrote a note and says it best...

We had a chance to catch up with J.Phlip this week about her upcoming European visit - here's what she had to say:

"Well I'm planting my home base... or maybe we should call it "HOME BASSSS!!!!" lol ... in Berlin from June to October. This is going to allow me to infiltrate the European market with some J.Phlip and all things Dirtybird! Although I wont be touring quite as much as I do over here, the gigs that I do have are mostly all "staple" parties and clubs in Europe. So the gigs should be dope and that will also leave me wayyyyy more time to write music... more originals and remixes!"

If you're planning to be in Europe this summer and/or want to keep tabs on what J.Phlip is up to during her European adventure, visit her MySpace often. Expect to see her perform at Watergate in Berlin and Fabric in London! Also, she adds that "the Red Bull Music Academy has a sick studio space in London and they have invited me and Worthy to spend a few days playing around on their gear and making some tunes there" Lucky!

The Shameless crew represents the Taurus sign strong with multiple crew mates having their birthdays in May. The celebration this year took place house party style! It all started at 4pm with Luvshack deep frying a couple of turkeys in the backyard. From there Menami cooked up some fierce spiked lemonade and a bunch of people showed up with food, drinks, bubble machines, a giant blow up bunny rabbit (?!) and good cheer to share. Music kept going until 5:30 am! Thanks to all of the DJs, friends and family that helped make such a fun filled, warm and festive party at the YES! house go off so well.

SHOW AND TELL @ Living Room, the biweekly live electronic music night at The Living Room is shaking its shame off and getting its game on with the live debut of Rolo Tamasi

Rolo Tamasi [SEA] was an Italian professional road racing cyclist. The highlight of his early career was his overall win in the 1971 Giro d'Italia of cycling, 53rd edition of the Corsa Rosa. Shorty after his triumphant victory he was involved in a terrible accident where he was hit while riding his bicycle by a large truck. Luckily, the man who was driving was a cryogenicist and in 1971 Rolo Tamasi was fully cryopreserved. In 2007, His frozen remains were sold to the University of Washington medical center for research. In 2008, He was unexpectedly unfrozen when a drunken scientist spilt Vodka Red Bull in his tank and simultaneously struck by lightening. Reborn in a new time and place he balances life between DJing and producing classic dub music and progressive techno, promoting and planning with Shameless Productions. He has opened for such greats as Deepchild Christian Martin & J Phlip!

I hopped into Menami's car the other day and she was rocking an old mixtape of mine. Well not super old, but it's at least 4 years by this point. I had forgotten all about it! Although I played out a lot of different genres at the time (still true today!), I particularly adored disco with enough rock elements that made it accessible to those kids that "don't like electronic music".

I love music. I'd like to think that everyone else does too. Life itself has a beat; around the 22nd day of gestation, the human fetal heartbeat starts and an individual's own personal metronome begins it's lifelong and rhythmic pacing. When I am DJ'ing I often love to imagine that if I can connect well enough with the dancers on the floor before me, I may be lucky enough to beat match someone's heart to the music I'm playing. (It's totally possible - it's a game I play with myself with the heart rate monitor on the elliptical at the gym and the dance tracks on my MP3 player).

Speaking of heartbeats and music, I just finished listening to Rolo Tamasi's latest track, Automata. This song is the source of my heartbeat analogies today. There is something about this ethereal and grounded track that makes me think that if I could somehow go inside, Innerspace-style, and cruise around listening in on all of the sounds of my body, my blood moving, my organs working, my breath circulating it might sound something like this track. But maybe I'm wrong. The name of this track refers to self-operating machines, which sounds decidedly non-organic. Am I incorrect? Does this track sound mechanical? Is it devoid of the life-sounds I was imaging? Or am I just a romantic living in a digital world? Whatever the findings I really love this track, as just like some of his other compositions, such as Puget Sound and Fuckabees Dub. Check his stuff out. We love it around here.

Fueled by an inhuman amount of Maker’s Mark and whatever kind of beer they can get their hands on, a bunch of self-proclaimed gear nerds have accumulated more firepower than Donald Trump. Armed with an arsenal of vintage Roland drum machines and synths, all sequenced by a modded first-gen Gameboy, Truckasauras create analog electro loops that skitter over starkly minimal drums; a sound (is it techno? is it hip-hop?) that straddles the chasm between goofiness and sincerity, and does so with aplomb. Citing influences ranging from Aphex Twin to 2 Live Crew, it’s next to impossible to pigeonhole the group into any one genre.

The Truck’s debut album, Tea Parties, Guns and Valor boasts 9 original tracks, a cover of the theme from “Airwolf,” and an array of remixes by some of the Northwest’s biggest names in electronic music: Copy, DJ Collage, and Jerry Abstract all try a hand at reworking the group’s signature sound.

The true Truck experience, however, is through their live sets. Fishing vests, trucker hats emblazoned with bald eagles, and American flags-as-capes are the fashion de rigueur for this crew, who stand in front of a projected VHS mashup of monster truck rallies, helicopter explosions, and homoerotic WWF matches. A pseudo-patriotic A/V extravaganza punctuated by megaphone squeals and synchronized (if unintentionally) head-bobbing, the foursome weave in and out of each other’s way, tweaking knobs over here, pushing buttons over there, all the while making the crowd go nuts with their quirky mix of white-trash sensibility and all-out musical mastery.

Show And Tell, a new live electronic music biweekly for aspiring and veteran producers, turntablists, and other related music performers, debuted at The Living Room in Seattle last Wednesday. The inaugural edition featured amazing sets from two of Seattle’s finest producers: The Naturebot (of Bonkers and Pleasure Boat Records fame) and The Googly (Bremerton’s finest), along with DJ Verse playing in between sets.

The night is designed for electronic music producers, performers, and turntablists to premiere and/or tryout new projects and live sets in a comfortable, listening party-like setting. Both The Naturebot and The Googly premiered outstanding sets for the Living Room audience, with the occasion also being The Googly’s very first live PA performance ever!

My Bloody Valentine Is Shameless this Friday! Featured artist: J. Phlip (Dirtybird)

It’s that time of the year – the annual My Bloody Valentine is Shameless party is Friday, February 12 at Chop Suey, and Shameless is very excited to have special guest J. Phlip of the Dirtybird crew as part of the action-packed lineup! Chosen as one of URB Magazine’s Next 100 of 2009, J. Phlip has quickly established herself as a tried-and-true party starter and swifly rising producer and remixer.

J. Phlip (Jessica Phillippe) spent her teens dancing at numerous clubs and parties in her hometown of Champaign, Illinois and nearby Chicago, where she enjoyed the Windy City’s iconic house and underground hip-hop scene. Her exposure to such legends as DJ Heather, Derrick Carter, and Sneak had a marked influence on her musical development and eventually inspired her to procure decks herself at age 19 while attending the University of Illinois, where she studied – and excelled – in the Systems Engineering program.

During her time playing out in Chicago about five years ago, she met Justin Martin at a gig. She traded one of her DJ mix CDs for his collection of his own tracks, which she eagerly started playing (and specifically learned how to use CDJs to play then out). A subsequent meeting soon afterwards with the rest of the Dirtybird crew in Miami – Martin, Sammy D, and Claude Von Stroke – solidified a friendship that eventually brought her out to San Francisco for gigs that, in turn, compelled her to make a permanent move to the Bay Area and join the crew officially. She loves the freedom of expression that the San Francisco scene offers to play however she wants, whether it be “weird or harder or deeper” and currently plays every Thursday in San Francisco at the legendary Endup and at quarterly Dirtybird parties in SF at Mezzanine.

Now a fully-fledged Dirtybird artist, she has toured with Claude Von Stroke and released solid remix tracks on the label. As her Soundcloud page attests, she describes her musical stylings in a myriad of ways – but usually attaches the prefix “hybrid booty” onto each description: “hybrid booty techno” and “hybrid booty electro.” She explains that Claude Von Stroke originally tagged the term upon her DJ mixes, so she decided to use it on the multifarious genres she favors. But, and more simply put, she just likes “to keep the music fun and BOOTY shakin’ whether it be techy or housey or dubby or whatever” in her DJ mixes and original productions.

J. Phlip’s productions fit in comfortably with the signature Dirtybird tech-house sound that launched her labelmates Claude Von Stroke, Tim Green, and Justin and Christian Martin into worldwide notoriety. Take her remix of Luca Lozano’s Berlinetta” – it maintains a solidly Dirtybird-like backbeat and bassline while throwing in waves of subtle yet powerful tribal syncopated beats and oceanic synth fills that weave in and out of the track. She takes this pattern a few steps further with her remix of the Claude Von Stroke/Bootsy Collins collaboration “The Greasy Beat.” Here, an incessantly funky and blippy beat and bassline is ever-prevalent and builds ever-so-subtle momentum, punctuated with periodic old school James Brown-esque that unfolds into a Bootsy-powered preaching to the masses that suddenly, drastically, peaks and unleashes the floodgates that is sure to make the dance floor go apeshit.

Her last appearance in Seattle was during last year’s Decibel Festival, where she rocked the waters on the Uniting Souls boat party (even while braving the flu through it all). Her appearance at My Bloody Valentine Is Shameless may be the last Seattle appearance of J. Phlip for awhile, as she’s planning to move to Berlin this spring for five months to spread her gospel even further. Based on what we’ve heard thus far, look for J. Phlip to do even bigger things in the next few years.

I don't know if it's the spiked egg nog, the upcoming days off from work or maybe the impending doom of relatives coming into town that often makes the last Saturday before Christmas a serious contender for party night of the year.

This year, we're thrilled to be returning to the See Sound Lounge after a long hiatus. As a resident DJ since they first opened the doors over 6 years ago, I've watched the Lounge transform from a fresh new venue in Belltown to a well established and respected haven for quality electronic music. I'm sure it helps that one of the owners is a DJ himself. Details such as top notch equipment and good sound are obviously valued. A healthy balance of top local DJs and high profile out of town bookings helps to keep the vibe fresh, while consistently serving up one amazing party after another. See Sound Lounge is a one of a kind cosmopoliton venue with a clean, minimalistic design that appeals to a wide audience.

However, this Saturday December 19th it's going to get dirty. Both Levi Clark and I will be holding down the decks while MC Anton Bomb brings his magic to the mic. Levi is also planning to bring down his electric guitar to use as a midi controller off and on throughout the night. We're excited to be returning to the See Sound Lounge and hope that you'll come join us in our BELLTOWN INVASION!!

Plus, we'll be keeping the party going at the Monkey Loft later on. Resident Shameless DJs Menami and Adlib will be joined by special guests Kris Moon and Kristina Childs. Ms. Childs killed it at the last Hive Mind Halloween and we're looking forward to hearing her throw down for us again.

Kris Moon is one of my all time favorite local DJs. Unfortunately he hasn't been local for the past couple of years which makes this appearance even more special. He was the founder of Robo.Trash, a club night that inspired me to expand my own personal scope as a DJ. He started the Division email list years ago which has grown tremendously and represents electronic music DJs, producers and promoters all over the Pacific Northwest. He's also one of the originators of the Laptop Battle, a concept that has caught on all over the country. The Laptop Battle is taking place this Friday December 18th at Chop Suey.

In addition, Kris Moon has a weekly radio show call Moon Bass every Wednesday on KBGA 89.9 FM Missoula. Here's a link and tracklist from his show last week...

2009 may go down in part as a year that reintroduced the concept of the listening party to Seattle’s nightlife. Bars and lounges the likes of Grey Gallery, Triple Door’s Musicquarium, and Nijo have increasingly invited DJ collectives such as Made Like A Tree, Sweatbox, and Shameless to set up shop and play sets that, while undeniably uptempo, focus more on the craft of the DJ as selector and record connoisseur. While people still dance, there are those in attendance that don’t just trainspot – they carefully listen and study each track and how they’re mixed into one another, how they’re sequenced, timed, and so forth. You could almost say that it’s the DJ version of chamber music.

Scratchmaster Joe’s International Lounge at Grey Gallery every Sunday night is certainly one of the most adventurous, deliberately indulgent, and consistently entertaining listening parties in Seattle. A notorious staple of the Seattle DJ world for many years, Joe is a world-class turntablist, having competed many times in DMC competitions, and is one half of the amazing bass duo Famous Players with former Seattlite/current New Yorker Sam Kirkland (who helped found Robo.trash back in the day with Kris Moon and others).

Now playing every Sunday at Grey Gallery from 7pm to 11pm, Scratchmaster Joe digs deeeeeeeeeep into his considerable vinyl collection and mixes and scratches at many different speeds everything from dirty breaks and vintage jazz to 60s-era psychedelic and 50s bop in combinations that you’ve never, ever thought of before. A friend who accompanied me to a Scratchmaster session last Sunday never heard him before, and said as we left that Joe never tries to get people to dance – he compels them to just listen.

This Sunday, Scratchmaster Joe’s guest is Garek Druss, a noise artist and has been part of bands such as Dull Knife, Story of Rats, & Heavy Teeth (more on Garek here)

7 minutes in Heaven? Record Bin Roulette

So it should come as no surprise that the KPLU show, "Record Bin Roulette" would appeal to music-loving and vinyl collectors like us, a collective of audiophiles, party-makers, and all-around music freaks.

KPLU (www.kplu.org) was founded in 1966 and is one of the most popular radio stations in our nation. Since the late sixities, KPLU has been bringing jazz, blues, and National Public Radio news to the Seattle area. By staying abreast of new and advancing technologies KPLU has found a national audience and ventures of theirs such as KPLU's full-time jazz webstream and HD radio channel Jazz24. Perhaps their own summary of themselves is best, "We look to provide more than broadcasting in the traditional sense, and are broadening the international content of KPLU to include all forms of listener-supported media." Rock on radio!

Back to the gem that is "Record Bin Roulette"! KPLU radio personalities John Kessler and John Maynard have created a 7 minute excavation into music's past, many selections are brought back into the light of day from obscurity and memory. Their gems are hard to find records, rare groove tunes, and forgotten melodies. These records are collected from flea markets and yard sales and showcases strange audio moments from records, television and movies. It's only seven minutes but it's great! Guaranteed to bring you bits you've never before heard anywhere.

“Record Bin Roulette” airs Thursdays at 5:35a, 7:35a & 4:45p, Fridays at 7:30p and Saturdays at 1:00p - Pacific time. Though I'm only a lowly digital immigrant, like a digital native I cannot abide by television or radio schedules. How KEXP Failed the Wighnomy Brothers

Recently, I volunteered for the Decibel Festival in Seattle. This was my first year as a volunteer and for me it was a bass blowing four day extravaganza that was literally mental. My responsibility was to pick up artists from the airport and get them to their hotel or whatever pit stops they needed. I shared so many amazing experiences with so many inspiring people it was almost too much to compute. From sharing cigarettes with N-Type to getting Tycho to sign a little airport sign for my roommate. There is just one story that stands out among the rest. That is how KEXP failed the Wighnomy Brothers… In all fairness I do enjoy KEXP from time to time. It's hit or miss mostly. Let me build up the story a tad.

After several trips to SeaTac, I was on my last run of the day to pick up Caspa and MC Rod Azlan. Now I'm not a big fan of dubstep. So I thought it was especially funny that I had to pick up most of the big dubstep artists. To be honest, I had never heard of either of them before this day. At SeaTac, I found them both in the baggage claim and before we even exchanged names Caspa needed a favor, "I need to hit up like a Walmart or Kmart for some cheap clothes." Really? Out of all the great clothing stores America has to offer you, you need Walmart? Is that what we're known for? I was like, "Listen man, we don't really have Walmarts' here in Seattle. I mean there's Target (same evil), but its pretty far away. SeaTac Mall is like right..." Cutting me off he says, "I'm not looking to spend a lot of cash. Target will work great if you don't mind…" I got the vibe I was just a "driver" to him. Rod on the other hand was a great fellow. We had a great conversation while waiting outside of Target about where drum and bass went. Rod then informs me that he is in need of the finer smoke. Being the gentlemen I am, I offered to help. It was that act of kindness that would later put me back in front of the hotel to meet the Wighnomy Brothers. Sometimes being a stoner has its perks.

After getting them to their hotel, I got a call from the boss saying they needed someone to pick up Holger Zilske aka Smash TV. How could I refuse, right? (I have to add that Holger was the most inspiring person I met during the Festival. Amazing musician and producer. It was an awesome detour). A second act of kindness that put me in front of the hotel to meet the Wighnomy Brothers. After getting Holger to the hotel, I raced to score that bag of fun for the MC.

Mission accomplished, the package was acquired and I even scored a parking spot right next to the hotel. After the back alley deal was made. I was walking back to my car when there in front of the hotel was Holger sitting with the Wighnomy Brothers. As I walked by I told Holger how nice it was to meet him. He then invited me to have a cigarette with him. Earlier in the day when I had dropped Holger at the hotel, I overheard the hotel clerk informing him of his sound check at 9:30pm. My acute attention to detail came in handy after I then noticed that it was close to 10:00pm. Both Holger and the Wighnomy Brothers had 9:30pm sound checks. I made a quick call to check on their driver's status and said, "I don't know where your ride is but I can get you guys to the venue." I pretty much had my car in front of the hotel before they could answer. It was unbelievable, the seriously huge vinyl crates of the Wighnomy Brothers were in my trunk. The bros themselves in my car. My only regret was that I had no music in my car, just the radio. So I flicked the dial to 90.3 and was bumping "Shake the Shack". They were into it.

The radio DJ came in and started listing off all the shows that were going down in the greater Seattle area for the night. I noticed right away that it was not Leon Berman but someone filling in for him. After 5 minutes or so the guest DJ finally gets to Neumos, where the Brothers were playing that night and proceeds to mention off the lineup for the night. "...Lowrez...Noah Pred...Rob Hood...Alex Under... and ah," then stops for a moment and says, "You're listening to 90.3 KEXP. Where the music matters..." Laughter ensues. I can only imagine what this guy would think if he knew the very DJ duo he failed to mention, practically headlining Decibel Festival, was tuning in. He probably would have thought, "Wow, I totally failed…"

Minutes later I delivered The Brothers to Neumos. There they killed the dance floor proper.

A GIANT thank you to everyone who came out for Hive Mind Halloween this year, it was an unparalleled success! We had over 1,300 people come through the door and netted over $24,000 for our two causes: Room to Read (building schools in poor villages in Nepal, Cambodia, Laos and neighbors as well as providing scholarships for young girls) and Youngstown (a community center providing arts education to at-risk youth and offices for environmental and arts organizations).

Of course, in addition to you all who came, we want to thank all the people who volunteered their time to make it happen: Randy, Sara, Laura and the whole crew from Youngstown, Philthy Sanchez and the Camp In Bed crew, Black Rock City Animal Control, Hippocampus, the Game of Clue, Levi Clark and the DJ's, Cam and the bar crew, and all the kind folks who came Friday, Saturday and Sunday to help out.

But after seeing how much enthusiasm there is, how so many groups were willing to kick in their time, and what a great time everyone had, we're looking for a way to keep the fire lit without burning out. And if it does happen again, we promise to have shorter bar lines!

HUGE thanks to everyone that came out to the 'Wild Beats' show at Chop Suey Friday night. It was so much fun and so really weird all at once. I was both thrilled and shocked to not just see so many people out for essentially a breakcore show, but to see so many people get into the theme and the ridiculousness of it all. Lots of different scenes coming together for that one. Also, a lot of friends/fam kicked down their time and energy to make it happen.

Shameless is proud to welcome back to Seattle Tigerbeat6’s own – and Berlin-native Kid606, as part of this Friday’s Where The Wild Beats Are party at Chop Suey!

Honestly, the sound that Kid606 puts out encompasses everything I strive for as an electronic music aficianado: it signifies a definitive middle finger to the notion of what the genre “should be” or, especially, the presumption that it should always cater to the lower common denominator. Quite the opposite: Kid606 seems to want to take all of his influences, throw them into a blender, and take handfuls of the resulting porridge, throw them onto a wall, and not only sees what sticks but, most notably, sticks together. In short, Kid606 doesn’t give a fuck about current musical trends – he just keeps pushing the boundaries of what electronic music could – and should – do, regardless of scrutiny and conformity.

The signature Kid606 sound – that throbbing, unrelenting, pace that perennially sticks around 140 bpm – is firmly rooted in an undeniable in-your-face approach to techno that never loses interest. This is best evident in his remix of Luke Anger’s “Work That Mod,” where he starts out with a frantic 140+ bpm beat pattern that quickly unfolds into a metallic cornacopia of otherworldly echoes, blips & syncopated rhythms that, just after the one minute mark evolves into a kick-ass shuffle beat. But by the two minute mark, the track turns a corner that loops deliciously creepy noises – and in the process creates a beyond futuristic future funk and aural treasure trove of techno for the ages.

Luke Anger – Work That Mod (Kid606 Remix)

The mind fuck that is “Roppongi Nights” drifts rhymically into dubstep territory but just enough to dip Kid606’s proverbial toes into the proverbial dubstep water. Undeniably, it’s still his sound, the collection of aggressive beats, warm yet sinister synths that seem to serve as the “hook” (as though there was such a thing), and yet you’re still hooked and up on your feet dancing and losing your mind to the track. It’s a hell of a phenomena, really.

Interview with the Flashbulb for "Where the Wild Beats Are"

Chicago’s Benn Jordan (AKA the Flashbulb, Flexe, Acidwolf, Human Action Network and numerous other monikers) ranks among the most versatile acts in the electronic music world. His production traverses spacey ambient, classic Chicago acid, melodic breakcore and everything in between. His largely improvisational live sets feature a guitar with MIDI pickups, extensive use of loop pedals and complete re-workings of his growing catalog. The end result is a gorgeous cacophony of sound leaving fans trying to decipher where he ends and the music begins. Shameless is very proud to have him co-headline October 16^th’s “Where the Wild Beats Are” at Chop Suey with Kid 606.

Benn represents everything we at Shameless love in a performer. His music is intelligent but danceable, gritty but melodic, and emotional but always a little tongue in cheek… and it’s always evolving. But Benn’s appeal extends way beyond our eccentric tastes. At only 31 years old, he already has over thirty major releases under a variety of monikers. He has remixed for artists such as Aphex Twin and toured with acts as diverse as Telefon Tel Aviv and the Dillinger Escape Plan. He is also owner of the nonprofit Alphabasic record label and an award-winning composer for advertising, television and film. In other words, his entire life revolves around making music.

I was recently able to interrupt Benn’s busy schedule for a brief interview. We spent a half hour discussing his personal musical evolution, his label as a “breakcore” artist and his views on pirating and digital music distribution. The highlights are included below. But the only way to truly appreciate Benn’s music is to catch a live Flashbulb set. We’ll see you at Chop Suey on October 16th. We promise it won’t disappoint.

ADLIB:

Between the Flashbulb, Flexe, Acidwolf and all your various other aliases, you’ve developed a pretty varied range in production spanning two decades. Just how big is your catalog to date?

FLASHBULB:

I’m not sure. It’s sometimes difficult because you have different versions of stuff. There was a vinyl version of Red Extensions of Me that came out in Europe that has all these extra tracks and is missing tracks from the US version. If you count all that stuff, it’s above forty. If you don’t, I would say it’s between twenty five and thirty releases.

ADLIB:

Out of all your work, which songs or albums are the most meaningful to you at this time?

FLASHBULB:

I think Reunion (as the Flashbulb) has been my favorite so far. It was done pretty fast so it felt really accomplished, and there weren’t many computers or much post-production used. It was very (live) performance based… I think it’s probably my most eclectic and original, where I have the most composition.

ADLIB:

You are considered a pioneer of the “breakcore” sound. Do you think this is an accurate description?

FLASHBULB:

It’s really hard to say. Some people would get angry if they heard someone say I was a pioneer of the breakcore sound. Others have told me that I’m a pioneer of the breakcore sound… When I think of breakcore, I think of really fast, evil, distorted sounding stuff. I’ve made a couple tracks like that, but for the most part I pay a lot of attention to melody and the form and function of the song, a lot more than just trying to make something as aggressive as possible. I’ve definitely made fast stuff but I’d call it more drum and bass mixed with metal or jazz.

ADLIB:

Your music has always struck me as much more melodic than a lot of the breakcore out there, although it’s often lumped into that category. You seem recently to have moved beyond that kind of sound into straight guitar work. What does it mean to be evolving past the stereotyped image as a breakcore producer to where you are now?

FLASHBULB:

It’s interesting how you get pigeonholed. I’ve always been a guitar player. It was the first thing I picked up and to this day it’s my number one instrument. Everything starts with writing on the guitar or performing on the guitar and using MIDI pickups to make synthlines… That moves into my live set, too. I’ve been working on a lot more on improvisation. It’s more of a challenge for me and it breathes a new life into touring. The more you rely on a laptop and the more you have a set that is foolproof and that you can’t mess up, the more boring it gets to perform live. So this one’s more nerve-wracking and less boring.

You can do things on a laptop that are pretty wild of course. But I’ve always strayed away from using your standard Ableton Live pre-made set where the only thing that can go wrong is your computer crashes or another technical problem. This is a little bit crazier. If I screw something up live, it’s screwed up in the loop pedal.

ADLIB:

It’s more of a challenge as an artist, then. So you’re pushing boundaries and forcing yourself to be a perfectionist.

FLASHBULB:

It also really comes down to sensing what an audience is feeling, too. That almost borrows from being a good DJ, being able to sense what the audience thinks. If you have an audience that seems really mellow, you’re gonna play more melodic, mellow stuff, but if you have an audience that’s really into dancing, you’re not gonna want to play something slow. It’s nice to be able to improvise and play whatever you think is the right energy.

ADLIB:

In the past, your live performances have incorporated a little bit from all your varied sounds. The last time you played for us (at Esthetic Evolution in Idaho), you played a lot of Acidwolf material and a lot of Flashbulb material with a lot of guitar work layered over your more traditional songs. Do you see your live sets continuing to draw from older material or going in a truly improvisational direction?

FLASHBULB:

I’ve been trying to do half-and-half. I’ve been going in and taking the stems from the original song sessions and incorporating them into the software and loop petals I use for live sets. That way I you pick and choose what you want to play and how long you want to play it for and add solos. You can mix the songs around or stay true to the original, depending on the vibe you get when you’re playing. I think it will mostly be half improvised stuff and half stuff on past albums.

ADLIB:

You’re playing with Kid 606 in Seattle. He plays pretty hard stuff. There will definitely be an interesting mixture of people there for his stuff and yours, but I imagine the whole crowd will want to rock out a bit. It will be an interesting experience for all parties, especially

FLASHBULB:

Yeah, his stuff is pretty heavy, from what I remember (chuckles). Definitely. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Miguel live. I’m really looking forward to it.

ADLIB:

You own your own independent label and also do production for the advertising industry. How do you divide your time between the label work, advertising and your own production?

FLASHBULB:

A lot of it’s prioritizing. If I’m releasing a new album (mine or someone elses) on Alphabasic, then that will take the reigns. If there’s a big campaign coming in for film, television or advertising, then I’ll prioritize that. There have definitely been a lot of sleepless nights and twenty-hour sessions. But the agency that I’m partnered with (Vapor) understands that I’m a recording artist. My contract with them is a freelance contract. If I want to tour or work on my own stuff for a week, I can tell them I’m not gonna work on anything. Of course, my bank account will reflect that (chuckles).

ADLIB:

What direction is Alpha Basic going here soon? What are some of your favorite releases on the label?

FLASHBULB:

We’re actually expanding it quite a lot recently with a couple different things. I have one release coming out called Dojo VS. Switch, which is gitchy, mellow stuff. I’m really happy to be releasing the next Phoenecia album. They were pretty big Schematic artists and I’m doing their next album. All before 2010… It’s a non-profit label. The only people who make a profit are the artists releasing on it. I don’t make anything… The money just carries over. It either goes to the artist or it funds the next release, which is nice.

ADLIB:

You and your label seem to be strong proponents of independent artistry and musicianship and anti corporate exploitation of artists. Just last year you released an album online and allowed fans to pay what they wanted. What motivated you to do this?

FLASHBULB:

I feel like the music industry in the 90s was just so greedy that hey didn’t give people what they wanted. They didn’t move along with the technology or progress. The first CD, I think it was Abba in 1978 or 79 or something, was really profitable. When your making hundreds of thousands, CDs cost around 50 cents each to make with the casing and the artwork. In the beginning, they were selling them for $25 each. You had a huge profit margin and artists were getting a small percentage. They eventually came down because of a class action lawsuit.

In the meantime, they (big labels) weren’t taking advantage of digital distribution and everybody else was. That’s when the whole Napster thing happened. You can’t blame people for pirating music. I don’t think there’s any malicious intent in it. Nobody feels like they’re stealing and nobody should feel like they are. It’s a much easier way to get music than there used to be.

Another way I look at it is if there are 100,000 people out there sharing my album, I’m really happy. This way, I get to play shows like the one next week. A lot of times, those downloaded albums end up in the hands of a producer or licenser for television, which pays more than if everybody brought the album.

I think you just have to open your mind. It’s just the way technology is and there’s nothing you can ever do to stop it. There’s no amount of lawsuits or copy protection schemes or yelling at people will ever stop it.

ADLIB:

It’s just the natural evolution of all art and music distribution.

FLASHBULB:

And it introduces this Darwinian concept to music promotion. The most successful artists are no longer just chosen by who has the record contract and the biggest promotion budget. Now an artist can be popular without a big label. Music is only going to get better that way because it’s a natural selection process with what people listen to.

You have artists that don’t have huge budgets or don’t know somebody but actually make good music and get rewarded for it. Whereas people like Brittney Spears don’t sell records any more. Nobody cares anymore because they can research a lot more music now and don’t have to be subjected to what they’re handed.

ADLIB:

And people could just go pirate it if they want.

FLASHBULB:

I think ultimately it’s a lot bigger than music sales. The music industry is where the focus is. It’s all about copyright. I hate speaking out against copyright because I make my living from it. If someone licenses my music or buys my CD it’s my copyright that creates that process. But copyright also prevents, for example, a kid in a poor family from watching CNN. It ends up being a cable channel where it costs $50 a month to watch CNN or Discovery or History. You end up with a situation where information is being sold and only the people who can afford to learn can buy it. The overall picture is a lot bigger than music. When information becomes free, it kind of levels the playing field. That’s hugely important for society.

I think it’s only a matter of time before everyone realizes socialized copyright is where we’re going. We’ll eventually have an internet tax like the UK’s TV tax… I think the government should setup a network like Napster and the tax gets divvied on what you download for free. It will be the fastest, most complete network. You won’t have to pirate anything and people will get paid for their share of what’s downloaded.
